Adventures in Sketchtopia Part 1: Heirs of the Sun

Countless millennia since man last walked Earth,

the Heirs of the Sun still breathed the air of dying stars.  Their forms would be strange-even incomprehensible-to their distant ancestors.  Still, their human nature was still active, buried deep within.

These are ideas from one of my upcoming writing expositions, Heirs of the Sun.  It is a concept I thought of years ago and one of my few writing projects that was preceded by drawings.  So, you're in for a treat.  Most Adventures in Sketchtopia won't have a direct corollary with my writing projects.

Let's jump in.

I'm not going to go into too many story details.  The big picture is that I tried to imagine what the human descendants millions of years in the future might be like, especially ones that could live for thousands of years.

The first type were ones that had constructed some sort of suit powered by stellar energy.  Let's call them Eternanauts.  The idea was that the energy would be gathered from stars to power both the suit and also reconstitute body matter.

The initial concept figure, seen below, had a fairly modest-sized suit.  There was an attachment for a solar panel and a two-handed, drill-like tool for collecting stellar energy (somehow).  There was also a ship that appears to be able to take in stellar matter and pushed it out as fuel (inspired by ramjet propulsion).

The next design bulked up the suit and made the solar panel and another equipment part of the back of the suit.

From there, the backpack ended up morphing into a fusion reactor, swelling up in size to be larger than the actual suit.  There were different iterations, some faint sketches and other more detailed.  All had a central column and support struts in common, things not found on the earlier suit concepts.

The second type were ones that resembled trees and drew in energy from the stars through a process similar to photosynthesis.  Let's call them Mind Trees.  I had only two concept images, both found below.

With that, our tour of images from Heirs of the Sun has concluded.

Bonus:

There was a single drawing I found after all the Heirs to the Sun drawings.  It also related to one of my future writing projects, Mechanica Flora (working title).  Here you go.

Creative Tool: Idea Mutation

It's mutating out of control!   Here is another wild method of improving the creativity of ideas through the process of introducing random 'mutations'.  I call it Idea Mutation. Method: Start with an idea.  Add it to a circle on the far left side of a piece of paper.  That is round 1. Make two branches off the first idea.  Each branch has a new circle.  That is round 2. For each branch, roll a 10-sided dice and select the 'mutation' from the table below. For each branch, create a 'mutated' idea incorporating that branch's mutation. Continue branching and mutation ideas for subsequent rounds (3, 4, etc.). Modifications: Include different mutations (ex. Add Thrill, More Collaborative, Clearer, etc.) Add null mutation (no changes for certain branches) Change probability of mutations (same mutation for more than one number) Examples:

Creative Tool: Idea Bracket

Let the Best Idea Win. How to generate great ideas?  Why not create an Idea Bracket ?  It is analogous to a sports league play-off.  Ideas are pitted against each other, with the winning idea moving on to the next round.  The last idea standing is the winner. I do have a few additional rules.  The Three M's : Modify, Merge, and Markup.  These rules allow for both idea modification and saving sub-winner ideas. Simple enough, right?  Let's try it out on some examples. Story Beginning Location Floating City and Haunted Graveyard merged into Floating Graveyard Screaming Wastelands modified into Blasted Wastelands Winner was Floating Graveyard and Sundered Titan merged into Floating Graveyard of Titans Artistic Inspiration Shack Brainstorming and Review Idea/Notes merged to Shack Review Ideas TCG View modified to TCG Mashup Shack Review Ideas marked for later Monster App and Walk and Song merged to Walk and Song with Monster App Priming Winner was T...
