Adventures in Sketchtopia Part 3: BSC Notepad #2

Claws and stone.

Now onto the second part of the BSC (Bismarck State College) notepad.  It continues the theme of having partially labeled drawings.

Page 7: Prehistory and Dark Summoning.  The first picture is a beast that has characteristics of a therapod and a ceratopsian.  And on its back is a smaller, two-legged version.  I don't know why, but I think the smaller one has summoned the larger one using some sort of magic.  In the next picture, magic is being gather from three dark pillars in the top left.  A bladed demon stands on the right and a twisting dragon populates the bottom, along with two skeletons.

Page 8:  Bones and Brass.  Well, that dinosaur is not having a good day.  A blaze of magic from the bottom left corner has burnt it down to the bone in a wide circle.  Was this the doing of the brass golem to the right?  Looks that way.  It is on fire and is certainly drawing magic from its hands for some purpose.  Below the fiery ordeal, the next page has a skeleton warrior with more bone whips.

Page 9: Dragons and Arrows.  Those arrows have strange properties: an undulating motion of a snake, deadly poison of a scorpion, the powerful stopping force of an ox, and the agility of a hawk.  The husky dragon is in dire straits.  On the other hand, the bottom dragons are creating their own special arrows.  A dragon arrow certainly will be hard to stop.  But where does an ouroboros arrow get you?

Page 10: Golems en masse.  Top left corner, we've got a squat, little, magic-spewing golem.  The bottom left has a golem with cannons for arms.  The top right shows an arm with bear-claw and eel-slick attributes.  The bottom right golem is protected by several layers of spells across its arms, body, and legs.  On the next page, several human-sized golems, called conscripts, show off a variety of weapons and abilities.  The ones on the right side are stronger; their clay mixed with iron.

Page 11: Boss Fight and Advanced Golems.  Flaming devil skull with heavy body armor.  It will definitely drop a lot of loot if you survive.  In the bottom left of the next page, a heavily-armored golem lurks, gun-arm splayed out.  On the right, a composite golem reveals its true nature.  Emerging from a magic camouflage that looks like normal human features, it reveals an auto-bow and hidden blade as part of its body.

Page 12: Thistle and Arch-mage.  Above, a mummified form staggers forward, thistles sprouting out across its entire body.  It is the Herald of the Thistle King.  Below, an arch-mage blocks the thing's path, staff at the ready.  How will the showdown end?

That's all for the BSC notepad.  I'll be digging into other source material next time.

Creative Tool: Idea Mutation

It's mutating out of control!   Here is another wild method of improving the creativity of ideas through the process of introducing random 'mutations'.  I call it Idea Mutation. Method: Start with an idea.  Add it to a circle on the far left side of a piece of paper.  That is round 1. Make two branches off the first idea.  Each branch has a new circle.  That is round 2. For each branch, roll a 10-sided dice and select the 'mutation' from the table below. For each branch, create a 'mutated' idea incorporating that branch's mutation. Continue branching and mutation ideas for subsequent rounds (3, 4, etc.). Modifications: Include different mutations (ex. Add Thrill, More Collaborative, Clearer, etc.) Add null mutation (no changes for certain branches) Change probability of mutations (same mutation for more than one number) Examples:

Creative Tool: Idea Bracket

Let the Best Idea Win. How to generate great ideas?  Why not create an Idea Bracket ?  It is analogous to a sports league play-off.  Ideas are pitted against each other, with the winning idea moving on to the next round.  The last idea standing is the winner. I do have a few additional rules.  The Three M's : Modify, Merge, and Markup.  These rules allow for both idea modification and saving sub-winner ideas. Simple enough, right?  Let's try it out on some examples. Story Beginning Location Floating City and Haunted Graveyard merged into Floating Graveyard Screaming Wastelands modified into Blasted Wastelands Winner was Floating Graveyard and Sundered Titan merged into Floating Graveyard of Titans Artistic Inspiration Shack Brainstorming and Review Idea/Notes merged to Shack Review Ideas TCG View modified to TCG Mashup Shack Review Ideas marked for later Monster App and Walk and Song merged to Walk and Song with Monster App Priming Winner was T...
