The Power and Thrill of Naming: Word Randomization Deux

To Dictionary, and Beyond...

Time for more word randomization via the vessel of the Power and Thrill of Naming Things.  In the first word randomization, I used the Internet.  Today, my tools are paperbound.

I shall pilot my ship towards three mysterious Word Islands.  Whatever the islands reveal, I'll craft into short chunks of creative writing.  Avast, hard to star-word!

Island 1: Dictionary Book Title
Setup: Take 3 words from random pages of the dictionary to create a book title.
  • Machine Gun Letter of the Law 2: Commoner vs. Magistrate
  • Monsters of the Dehumanized Detention Block: Remand of the Flesh Eating Felons
  • Harbinger of the Unvarnished Muzzle
  • Gallium Boundary: The Third Circulate's Tale
  • Detective Radium and the Mystery of the Photographic Floating Waist

Island 2: Novel Plot Twist
Setup: Take a sentence from a random page of a novel and create a plot twist.
  • "I did not answer, and while watching the suspected waves, began with the help of the sailors to put on my heavy sea-dress." -20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (page 220)
    • To my dismay, the diving suit was sabotaged with a collection of poisonous sea-life.  As soon as the helmet closed over my head, I felt a sting at my ankle.
    • The cold voice of a sailor intoned next to me.
    • "You feel that?  That's the venom of the flickering starfish.  If you want the antidote, you'll do what we say."
  • "For when the dragon died, his swoon left him, and he fell into a deep sleep of weariness." -The Silmarillion (page 269)
    • When he awoke, he found no dragon corpse.  Rather the body of a young maiden lay slain.  His sister, long missing, had been the dragon the whole time.  Transformed by an evil hag, she'd sought her brother day and night for his aid.
    • Too late did he realize the ease of battle and the haunting look in those reptilian eyes as he'd brought his sword down.
    • "Oh what cruel fates have brought me to these sundered shores of grief!"
  • "The rich odor of spice-coffee filled the room." -Dune Messiah (page 27)
    • "No, never again."
    • He flung the tray with the drink out the door.
    • "I'll never touch the stuff again.  Even if my eyes bleed out!"
    • He returned to his couch and sat, trembling.  The effects of the addiction were growing worse.  Soon his vision turned from blurs and spots to utter darkness.

Island 2: Monster Manuel Scenario
Setup: Take a creature from a random page of the DnD Monster Manuel and a random word from a science encyclopedia to create a scenario.
  • Hydra and Protista: A mythological hydra is shrunk down and transported to the Kingdom of the Sentient Protists and forced to battled a Cnidarian hydra.
  • Black Bear and Internal Combustion Engine: A time-traveler must somehow hook up a pair of black bears to his race-car time machine as a replacement for his internal combustion engine in order to beat a vengeful fey warlord in a race.
  • Quaggoth and Oxidation: A tribe of Quaggoths (evil medium-sized humanoids in the Underdark) force a small band of captives to repair their sacred tower which has become severely oxidized.
  • Saber-toothed Tiger and Analog: A saber-toothed tiger needs to trade in his analog teeth for digital ones, prompting a visit to the Plane of Machanus.

Creative Tool: Idea Mutation

It's mutating out of control!   Here is another wild method of improving the creativity of ideas through the process of introducing random 'mutations'.  I call it Idea Mutation. Method: Start with an idea.  Add it to a circle on the far left side of a piece of paper.  That is round 1. Make two branches off the first idea.  Each branch has a new circle.  That is round 2. For each branch, roll a 10-sided dice and select the 'mutation' from the table below. For each branch, create a 'mutated' idea incorporating that branch's mutation. Continue branching and mutation ideas for subsequent rounds (3, 4, etc.). Modifications: Include different mutations (ex. Add Thrill, More Collaborative, Clearer, etc.) Add null mutation (no changes for certain branches) Change probability of mutations (same mutation for more than one number) Examples:

Creative Tool: Idea Bracket

Let the Best Idea Win. How to generate great ideas?  Why not create an Idea Bracket ?  It is analogous to a sports league play-off.  Ideas are pitted against each other, with the winning idea moving on to the next round.  The last idea standing is the winner. I do have a few additional rules.  The Three M's : Modify, Merge, and Markup.  These rules allow for both idea modification and saving sub-winner ideas. Simple enough, right?  Let's try it out on some examples. Story Beginning Location Floating City and Haunted Graveyard merged into Floating Graveyard Screaming Wastelands modified into Blasted Wastelands Winner was Floating Graveyard and Sundered Titan merged into Floating Graveyard of Titans Artistic Inspiration Shack Brainstorming and Review Idea/Notes merged to Shack Review Ideas TCG View modified to TCG Mashup Shack Review Ideas marked for later Monster App and Walk and Song merged to Walk and Song with Monster App Priming Winner was T...
